The Role of the Friend of the Court
What the Friend of the Court Cannot Do
  • The friend of the court cannot represent either you or the other parent in court.

  • The friend of the court cannot make the other parent a better parent.

  • The friend of the court cannot investigate allegations of child abuse or neglect. Depending on the exact nature of the allegations, the allegations must be reported to either law enforcement agencies or the Protective Services Unit of the Family Independence Agency. They will conduct an investigation and file a report with the friend of the court. The friend of the court may consider the results of other agencies' abuse and neglect investigations, but, as stated above, the friend of the court itself cannot conduct the investigation.
