5.16Failing to Apply for Registration and Certificate of Title

A.Statutory Authority

“An owner of a vehicle that is subject to registration under [the MVC] shall apply to the secretary of state, on an appropriate form furnished by the secretary of state, for the registration of the vehicle and issuance of a certificate of title for the vehicle.” MCL 257.217(1). “The application must be accompanied by the required fee.” Id. “An application for a certificate of title must bear the signature or verification and certification of the owner.” Id.

B.Penalties

MCL 257.901(2) provides for:

imprisonment for not more than 90 days; or

fine of not more than $100; or

both.

C.Sanctions

Only applicable sanctions are listed below; accordingly, if a particular sanction is omitted from this section, it is not applicable to this offense.
